The brush hairs are tapered which allows the brush to smoothly glide across an uneven surface. You can twist the brush in your hand to keep the paint flowing. I’ve also heard great things about brushes from ‘ZIBRA’. You can use a fluffy roller to get in between the gaps however I find that rollers absorb so much paint that I’d rather use a brush. They can be quicker but I find they apply a thinner layer of paint so can require more coats in the long run. Using a brush? I’ve spent the time neatening those edges so they are PERFECT! I’ve also looked at other people’s murals and never stepped closer than a metre away to admire the paint job. If you do however get close enough to look at the paint strokes of someone less obsessive, perfectionist than you, you’ll spot these frayed imperfect edges all over the place. They aren’t worse painters, they just have a better judgement of what is good enough. Don;t get me wrong, I love being a perfectionist, getting crisp edges and fine lines and most of my work is immaculate, but as a muralist, it’s important to be able to look objectively at your work and know when to step away. Weather affects how well the paint ‘cures’. If your paint doesn’t have the correct conditions to fully dry, it may stay wet and wash away. I can even cause wrinkles in your paint as you add layers and eventually it will just slide off. Most muralists will check the weather before they agree to paint. Here are some points to consider: Interior painting can usually happen all year round (*so long as temperatures are above 8°C) Exterior murals can only be painted during dry weather Emulsions typically require 4 hours to dry between coats, longer in cooler weather. Turning Ideas into a Plan Once I had pages of drawings, words, colours, symbols and themes gathered from the workshops, I began designing the mural. This stage is always a blend of intuition and logistics: finding imagery that felt joyful and calm, professional but human while also satisfying the needs of the stakeholders at the NHS trust. The dimensions for this wall were long and narrow so an evolving scene made the most sense. Within the workshops nature, wildlife and food came up often so I created a picnic scene that featured people from all different backgrounds relaxing, exercising, playing and enjoying the odd ice cream and slice of cake. This made for a whimsical design that serves as a little light relief for those visiting the A&E. The easter eggs were hidden within the design for staff to find and also create connections for anyone visiting the hospital.
